MVLA Pythons U10 - Remembering Jonathan @ Manteca

The MVLA Python teams played with green hair in Manteca last weekend in remembrance of Jonathan, and in recognition of his fun-loving spirit. It is such a tragic loss for his family, and the soccer community is also grieving the loss of one of their bright stars.  We really feel for the family in this tragedy that could have happened to any of us who drove home to the south bay that weekend, so I think we all hugged our kids a little tighter and perhaps focused a little less on win or lose, and a little more on the joy of watching our kids play soccer.

Per goal donations from last weekend's games have been sent along to SC Sporting, as well as individual donations from families via the website.  Jonathan and the Manzo-Chavez family will be in our thoughts this holiday season.

Deepest Sympathies From The U9 Girls Mustang Miracles

As the team manager of the U9 Girls Mustang Miracles, I wanted to convey the enormous sense of devastation we all feel for Jonathan and his family and friends.  The moment I heard the tragic news, I immediately emailed my team.  I asked for donations on behalf of our team...it was the very least we could all do...and there was no hesitation whatsoever.  Our entire team wore commemorative stickers on their jerseys during their next game in honor of this amazing boy who so loved the game of soccer. To score a goal as a defender, and to have his family see it is an incredible, yet bittersweet image that we will all carry with us for the rest of our lives.  The pictures of Jonathan, and the description of him desperately clinging to his jersey is beyond heartbreaking.  Please know that we are all grieving...as parents, as sons, as daughters, and as a community.  Jonathan will always be in our hearts and in our prayers.  I cannot begin to fathom the immense sense of loss and grief that his friends and family are experiencing right now.  Please know that the U9 Girls Mustang Miracles and their families all send their deepest love and sympathy at this extremely difficult time.  Jonathan will always be missed and will NEVER be forgotten.

Jonathan Is Watching Over Us

Here are two amazing stories to share.

Tino Silva, the Santa Clara Youth Soccer League President lost his mother-in-law to cancer last week, and he was down in San Diego attending her service on Sunday, the same day as Jonathan's Vigil Service. Tino met with Jonathan's parents last week and they asked him to speak at their son's service. Tino was concerned if he would be able to attend his mother-in-laws service in San Diego, then fly-up to San Jose to attend the service for Jonathan.

Last Sunday, Tino attended his mother-in-laws service where he was scheduled to speak, then immediately dashed to the San Diego Airport, ran onto a crowded Southwest Airline flight and asked the flight attendant for a seat in the front row because he needed to get off the plane in San Jose as soon as it touched down. The flight attendant asked him if he was with the FAA, and he chuckled - "yes sure."

Tino said the plane backed-out of the gate in San Diego and never stopped until they landed in San Jose. The Southwest flight just rolled-out of the airport gate and took-off into the air like he hit all the green lights on a crowded street. They did not taxi away from the gate, or have to cue-up in line to depart, they just back-up and flew to San Jose. His flight landed 5 minutes earlier than scheduled in San Jose, and he was picked-up by Sporting Coach Ralf Cebrian, who got him to the chapel for the Vigil. Of course, the small chapel was spilling-out with soccer players and families that came-out to pay their tribute to "Pretty Boy."

Here is another story that Tino told us at the Sunday Vigil.

A friend of Amalia (Jonathan's Mom) had a dream (two weekends ago the same time as the accident). Her friend had a dream that she saw Jonathan playing soccer on a big field, running around, doing all his soccer tricks, laughing and smiling with joy. Then he stopped and told the women..."tell my Mom that everything is fine and I am OK." The women didn't understand this dream but called Amalia the next morning to explain her strange experience in great detail. That is when Amalia said to her friend, Jonathan died yesterday in a car accident after playing soccer and scoring a goal for his team.

Dear Chavez family,
I am sorry for the loss of ur inicent boy. Even though I didn't know him I still cried when I ready the article of the tragic accident. He has touched my heart because even at the last moments of his life all he could think about is his green & white striped jersey. That shows how much love he had for the game of soccer. I can tell but what i have read about him that he was a funny, loving, cute boy. That is why he will always be in our hearts & prayers.

We can't imagine the pain and sorrow that the entire family is feeling right now, please know that our thoughts, prayers and wishes are with Jonathan's family and teammates during this difficult time. Our heartfelt sympathies to the Chavez family

Although we did not personally know this little boy, the impact of his death has left me and my family devastated with sadness.  This is the kind of news that shook me to the core as it hit so close to home, literally, as I learned that the accident happened in my hometown of Livermore, and because I have two boys that I have shuttled back and forth to the same soccer tournaments for over 10 years.  Too often, safe travel to these tournaments and anywhere is taken for granted.  The loss of this wonderful child will serve as a reminder to me to never be too casual about the value of life, especially that of my children. My family and I will be praying for the Chavez family during this unthinkable period of grief for relief in knowing that Jonathan will be this soccer community’s newest angel who will watch over all soccer families and pray for their safety.  Our hearts are with you!

My husband and I attended Jonathan's vigil last night. It was amazing. Over 1,000 attended the event, most folks had to wait outside for hours in order to get into the funeral home. It's amazing how the community has come together to rally around the Manzo Chavez Family. People from as far as Mexico, Costa Rica, and Australia have sent money to the family. The love and the energy in the room last night was incredible.  Amazing what little Jonathan has done for the world.

Dear Manzo Chavez Family,

I am very sorry for your loss. I've only known Jonathan for a while but he was like my brother. He always helped me if I did something wrong in practice or games. He told the funniest jokes ever and no matter what he had a smile on his face. I still miss everyone saying Pretty Boy and it's still surreal to me that this has happened.
At times I think he is still talking to me or coming to watch us play our futsal games.

With sympathy, ..from MVLA Pythons '98 family

Though we didn't know Jonathan in person, we read the blog comments about him and we wish we had!  His personality and his love of soccer and of life, comes through clearly in the photos, and the messages from friends, family and teammates.  The MVLA Pythons played Jonathan's team in NorCal preliminaries this year, so we also know how tough it was to get the ball past him and score J

It is an unbelievable tragedy to lose a child, and to think of the future potential that they will not now fulfill – at least not in this life on earth.   For those who are directly touched by this loss, the grief process is long, and will never be totally absent, so be patient with it.  One site I would recommend for those who have children dealing with grief, is http://www.dougy.org/  The center is physically located in Oregon, but they have some good books and online resources.

As with a number of teams who will be playing in the NorCal cup in Manteca this weekend, the Pythons '98 teams will remember Jonathan as they play.  The Pythons players and coaches will "sport" green hair, and the families will pledge money for Jonathan's memorial fund for each goal that the team scores over the weekend.

Our deepest sympathy goes out to Jonathan's family and friends, and the SC Sporting club, and we wish them strength in the difficult time ahead.

SC Sporting Manzo #8

To the Manzo-Chavez Family and Friends,

Please accept our most heartfelt sympathies for your loss. Sporting is one large extended family. Jonathan I personally did not have the pleasure of meeting him but consider him family. This weekend the Sporting teams will have arm bands in honor of Jonathan and I believe every player will play their hearts out in his honor.

Lots of love and peace to you.

More SJ Mercury Guest Book Messages

November 20, 2008
My grandson, Keyshaun, played in the same Manteca soccer tournament and his team played against Jonathan’s team this past weekend. Because we were unable to attend the jamboree, our daughter gave a “play-by-play” commentary over the phone and it was wonderful to hear the players and the support given by cheering parents, siblings and friends of both teams.

We were very saddened to hear of your terrible accident and death of your son, Jonathan. He would be pleased and proud of you for saving his jersey and then for giving it away when it was needed!

Chavez Family,

Our hearts go out to you for your loss. Our daughter is part of the SCSC U18, so I know how strong the bond is from the club. You will forever be in our hearts and prayers. When I heard the news yesterday a poem came to mind which is below, please find comfort in the Lord..........

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.

I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you awaken in the mornings hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circled flight,
I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there, I did not die.

My heart aches to think what you and your family are going through. I found this poem, hope it makes you feel little bit better.

I miss you too
Mommy please don't be sad,
I miss you so much too.
It's beautiful here,
but I worry a lot about you.
I sleep with angels watching me...
there is only love up here.
I am never lonely or afraid
because God is so very near.
I walk with Jesus every day,
He is very kind and loving.
Don't worry Mom, He hold my hand
when we cross a golden street.
I never cry or hurt myself,
I see Grandpa every day.
I play and laugh and sing a lot
and I hear you when you pray.
Please Mommy, don't be mad at God,
you see He loves me too.
And even though you are not with me,
I am really still with you.

I don't know Jonathan or the family but I shed tears reading this story about a wonderful boy and his loving family. I'll pray that you find comfort in God's love and that all of you have the strength to go on, especially the Mom. I am a mother of 6 and cannot imagine the pain you are going through. And Jonathan's siblings sound very caring. I'm sure your brother is watching down on both of you. May Jonathan rest in peace. God bless you all.

Dearest Chavez Family, we cannot begin to imagine how you are feeling during this time of losing your son. There is so much grief. I can only say that I am deeply sorry for the loss of your beautiful little boy Jonathan. Our son Marcos plays for Santa Clara Sporting U8 and we were so horribly saddened by the news of your accident and tragedy. My family and I are praying for God to help you and your family to heal and bring you peace. Jonathan will never be forgotten, he lives in the hearts of those he touched forever. To Jonathan's sister, always remember that you were very blessed to be with your brother holding his hand and comforting him with your touch when he took his last breath here on earth. God bless you all in this time of sorrow.

4th grade class at St. John the Evangelist, Carmichael, CA give prayers and dedications to Jonathan in their own way

My son played at State Cup -- his 4th grade teacher, Mrs. Rummel, had the class give a prayer for Jonathan. You can see her response. They all feel pain for the family.

Thank you so much for including a prayer in your class. Jeremy told me first thing that your class prayed for him. It is very sad for any family to lose a child. I can't even imagine.

Can you include this child in a special prayer at mass on Friday at St. Johns - a quick prayer in class (Mrs. Rummel). He is a 4th grader in Santa Clara. He was killed in a car accident on the way back from State Cup soccer tournament in Manteca that Jeremy played in. It is very sad.

We are so sorry and feel like it is our own -- it could have happened to any of us. Please let the family know that we are keeping them in our prayers.

Our family, player Jeremy Hayes, San Juan Lightning 99 White team player -- would like Jonathon's parents to know that he will pray for his family along with his classmates at St. John the Evangelist church in Carmichael, CA. He will ask that Jonathan be given a special prayer at mass on Friday.

We have given a contribution via PayPal but realize that no $$ amount is nearly enough for the pain they must be feeling.

I know what a difficult loss this will be for you in particular. Not only will you miss your cherished son but also a trusted soccer player. I can only imagine the depth of the void that it will leave in your personal, family, and soccer community.

Our teams will be doing something this weekend – silences of moment for the memory of Jonathan.
May God Bless You and God Bless Jonathan's soul.

Dear Chavez Family:

Our Elk Grove Everton U9 Boy's Team has been deeply saddened by this tragedy. I was impressed by the care Jonathan wanted to take of his uniform when he was so badly injured. It clearly showed his love for the game.

Unfortunately it is these types of events that bring us all together and remember how important family is. The game is important but not as important as family. The soccer community is like a family.

No parent, brother or sister should have to go through such pain. We will continue to keep your family in our thoughts and prayers.

Our team will be doing something this weekend - green hair, arm bands or something in memory of Jonathan.

May God Bless You and God Bless Jonathan's soul.

Dear Chavez Family,

As I folded my two boys Sporting uniforms today I couldn't get over the fact how somethings in life are just not fair. He had such a passion and love for the sport and his club. I want my 2 boys to strive for the love he had for his club, the game, and life.

I had the pleasure of watching him play at Sporting and futsal. He seemed to always have a smile on his face. I pray for him and your family. Just know God has a plan for all of us and for some reason unknown to us God needed to call Jonathan home.

I know every time I go to watch my boys play a game in their green and whites I will think of Jonathan and his celebration after making a goal and the pride he had being a member of the Santa Clara Sporting Club.

God bless.

7:02 - The Chavez Family and Sporting FC Team 98

To the Chaves Family, Coach Brasil and Sporting FC 98 Team:

At 7:02 that Sunday morning, the same morning that I received that devastating news from Norcal, I couldn't fathom nor would want my players to play that day. I didn't want them to play because through everything that I have done as a coach, I felt devastated with that news, but, moreso for the Chavez Family, Coach Brasil, Sporting FC 98 players, and their parents. Simply, there are no words to express the sorrow we felt that Sunday because there is nothing, nothing, nothing as painful as losing a friend, a teammate, a dedicated player, a nephew, a brother and most of all, a son.

We, the Bay Oaks U10B Road Runners 98 and the entire Bay Oaks Soccer Club Organization, are deeply saddened to hear about the death of Jonathan. We know how difficult this must be for each of you. You will continually be in our thoughts and in our prayers. As we step in to the field to play on Sunday, we will remember Jonathan - #8 on each players forearm, green and white ribbons on our jerseys, and for our younger girl teams, green and white ribbons for their pony tails.

"When those we love have left this earth, we still can feel them near. We'll see a picture, hear a song, and it's just like they are here. And when we call upon our faith, when we believe and trust, we know the ones we care about are always close to us." -Constance Parker Graham

AVYSL Mercury Black 98 will have #8 for our D2 cup

Our League was very sad to hear this story, since like our team (U10), they
are still so little, this story shows the importance of loving our boys everyday!

AVYSL Mercury Black 98 has decided to wear sticker with a Santa Clara Sporting logo and the #8
in the middle of the logo for our District 2 cup Dec, in memory of the passion of soccer that Jonathan Manzo Chavez brought to all of us!

Please Please help donate to the family!

We are praying for you

I read your story in the Mercury and cannot imagine what you must be going through. Although we have never met, my son plays for AVYSL and the story of your son hit so close to home. I think we all know the love for soccer these boys have and the joy it brings their families to spend time together watching them express that love. That joyous occassion was changed so drastically in a matter of seconds is a tragedy beyond comparison.

I don't know if I can offer anything to ease the pain you must be feeling, other than letting you know that people everywhere are sending prayers for your family and your son. He is in our thougths and prayers, and you are too.

To The Family Of Jonathan Manzo Chavez,

To The Family Of Jonathan Manzo Chavez,

We were deeply saddened when we received word of what happened to your son. I recall seeing him on certain occasions like at the Chucho Ramirez Camp, running around having fun with some of our kids. It opened my eyes and made me think about my own family. I had a dream and in my dream I saw one of my lil nephews pass away. It crushed me and as soon as I woke up I wanted to make sure my family was ok. I also happened to write a new song. I recorded it as soon as I finished writing. The Song is basically my way of telling how I felt about what happened to Jonathan and how it closely related to my life. My nephews are all about soccer. My sister and my brother-in-law have teams in Alviso (winchester Soccer League), and if any of the kids on those teams would go through the same, it would crush us all. I'll include the song so you can hear it and I hope you know the whole soccer community has you in our prayers. Stay Strong.

Almaden Valley Youth Soccer President Rallys League for Jonathan

A Message from Our President
In Memory of Jonathan Manzo Chavez from Santa Clara Sporting Soccer League

On Saturday the Almaden Mercury U10 Green team played the Santa Clara Sporting team in a Nor-Cal State Cup tournament game. A young player from SCYSL, Jonathan Manzo Chavez was on the way home from the tournament in Manteca, and lost his life in a tragic traffic accident with his mom and siblings. Although Jonathan’s father had to leave the tournament early to attend work he still made the drive to watch as much of his son’s games as he could, never imagining this would be the last time he’d see Jonathan play. As we finish this season, embrace your children and their enthusiasm for the game. As parents we should enjoy every minute of watching our children play. I know there are areas our league can improve and we will. Our thoughts are with Jonathan’s family, and let’s everyone take things in perspective as we move forward.
Thanks,
John Jussen

Love and Sorrow from Alliance FC Devils 98

To the Family of Jonathan Manzo Chavez,

Our hearts go out to you in this time of incredible loss. The sadness that has been felt across the state pales in comparison to what your family must be experiencing right now. To lose one so young with such a zest for life, and for soccer...it is too heartbreaking to comprehend. Please know that the magnitude of this sad moment is felt by everyone in the Alliance FC family and we are all praying for you and for Jonathan right now. We have had many monumental battles with Sporting Green teams over the years, but have always appreciated the amazing competition that took place and always enjoyed how they brought out the best in our players. Their is poignancy to Jonathan passing after playing his last soccer game and being in the jersey he so clearly coveted. There may be something meaningful wrapped up in that tragic moment, but we understand that it may take time for you to ever see it that way.

To watch our children play soccer is easily one of the greatest joys we experience in our lives. Cherish the time you had watching him and treasure the memories that he brought to your lives. His passing should serve as a reminder to everyone how fleeting life can be and how we truly must treasure every moment we have with our children on the soccer field and off. God bless you and God bless Jonathan.

Santa Rosa United - United we stand in our support of you

Dearest Chavez Family and to Santa Clara Sporting Soccer Club

On behalf of everyone at Santa Rosa United we would like to express our deepest condolences to you and your Club. Our Inter and Galaxy teams were at the Manteca competition and learned on Sunday morning of the terrible accident. Before the kick off on Sunday, a minute of silence was observed and parent by parent we heard the news. Standing on the sideline watching our children play that Sunday morning was a dull moment as we all imagined ourselves in your shoes. We saw the photo of Jonathan posted by Norcal and the visual connection of the little lad made your tragedy even more real. The tournament ended our teams drove home, in separate cars, but each parent filled with the dread of your news and the thoughts of Jonathan

Words cannot express our horror for your pain and our best wishes for your healing. I am sure that you are very proud of your great player and the final goal he scored a final blessing on a short but special life. We are truly sorry for your loss and our prayers are with you

Whenever we see or play a green and white jersey of Santa Clara Sporting Soccer Club, the parents of Inter and Galaxy will remember this little lad that should be lining up opposite them, and say a prayer for number 8, Jonathan Manzo Chavez.

We go back to Manteca on Saturday to play again and will dedicate our game to the memory of Jonathan Manzo Chavez

God bless to you all.

From your soccer friends at Santa Rosa United, CA.

Then my wife and I read today's article about this courageous and remarkable young man, Jonathan. We never had the privilege of meeting Jonathan or seeing him play. But, based upon what we read in today's paper and the many wonderful messages here, we can imagine how proud you must be of him. We know Jonathan is with God now, probably showing Him a soccer move or two. On behalf of the Zenere family, I pray God give you all of the strength and love you need to make it through this, and may God bless your incredible Jonathan.

He was just the cutest little guy...

Dear Chavez Family,

Please know that all around the State(and further, I'm sure)there are people, young and old, who are praying for you and your precious Jonathan. We can't get over how tragic this is and how it never had to happen. It's a lesson to all of us to slow down and enjoy each day with those we love.

As one Sporting Family to another, our hearts are broken for you. We will never look at our son's soccer uniform in quite the same way. Their green and white hoops are so important to them, it's a part of who they are. May you be blessed. Your family and Jonathan will never be forgotten.

A Sporting Family

Wear Your Uniform for Jonathan

Dear Coaches, Assistant Coaches, Managers, Parents and Players:

If you plan to attend any of Jonathan's services, his parents requested that all players attending the services wear their soccer uniform (hoop jersey for Sporting players) and they also requested that the atendees NOT wear black as Jonathan was a very happy child and they will be celebrating his life.

Please make every effort to attend the services to support the family.

Sincerely,
Sueli Almeida

I cannot tell you how this is something that I can literally feel in my soul and I am so sorry for your loss. I too have a son who loves soccer and we are a soccer loving family. Please hold on to the good memories. I have a daughter who would have been 16 and it has been 12 year since she passed. I wish you peace and give yourself all the time you need to heal.

Your son sounds like he loved life, he was taken from earth and has left a void for his loved ones. He gave so much in his 10 years, love, laughter and a lot of joy. May his memories always keep him in your hearts. No words can express what pain you are going through, nor our sympathies, just keep in mind there are many who care and are praying for your family. He is not far away, he's just with the Lord now. May you have the peace and strength in this difficult time. May the Lord comfort you.

To hear the light of a child being extinguished well before they've had a chance to shine for the world is such a tragedy. To those whose lives he brightened, please never let his memory fade.

Prayer brings hope, and delights the soul, as well as comforts the heart. During these days for us all it is a time for prayer, and we can perhaps all reflect together as loving to pray in loving remembrance of Jonathan Manzo-Chavez, as well as for all the days of our lives. Let us humbly with all our hearts, minds, and soul pray for peace and comfort for the family!
